Nikon, now I am impressed

I have always shot Canon cameras/lens, so of course I am going to be bias. At the beginning of the DSLR war, Canon was clearly the winner and they pretty much grabbed most of the DSLR market. Anyone you run into shoots Canon DSLRs.

A few years ago, Nikon had it with Canon and began their attack. Their strategy was to price all of their DSLRs lower compared to the Canon cameras. On top of that, Nikon decides to throw in as much technology and features into their entry level DSLRs as possible. Nikon started to see their increase in market share.

One of the toughest battle that Nikon faced was Canon's full frame sensor cameras (1DsMark3 and the very popular 5D). Full frame sensor cameras are DSLRs with a 35mm film dimension sensor. Nikon did not have any full frame cameras to compete, so Canon was the only choice for those that want full frame. Nikon came back and came back strong. They offered their high end, kick butt D3 (full frame) a few months ago and now they just announced their latest "affordable" full frame D700.

Now if someone walks up to me and ask the question: "Do you think Canon or Nikon is better?", I am going to have a hard time answering.

I know what you mean. I'm in the market right now for an upgrade to my lowly Nikon D40. My choices are the Canon 40D, Nikon D700, or wait for the Canon 5D mK2.

While Nikon does have some impressive gear, I haven't seen anything shot with the same "attitude" or feeling as those that come from a Canon DSLR. Maybe Mr. Augie Chang should rent or drop some cash on this D700 and show us what Nikon can do.

I've always wanted to see my favorite Canon shooters show us what can be done with a Nikon. I think that would truly shed some light on answering "Which brand is right for me?"

Oh, nice! I love it when companies compete with each other: consumers win!

No kidding. This is like a dream come true for Nikon shooters. The amazing D3 sensor inside a D300-esque body, and for $2000 less than the D3 itself. Exciting stuff, since the pressure is squarely on Canon to stay competitive.

Either way, folks have some fantastic tools to work with these days...

I've been told by dedicated Canon users (Joanie, RP, and my other photog friends) that Nikon's entry-level DSLRs offer more bang for the buck. Just comparing the Nikon D60 to the Rebel XTI there is no question which camera to get. Now as you move up to the 5d or the D700 - I think the score is pretty even.
